A plain answer
How much does a small business website cost?
A simple small business website usually costs a one-off build fee plus a small yearly amount for the domain, hosting and upkeep. With us it is €390 one-off and €100 a year, with the domain at cost and no monthly fees.
The four costs of a website
- The build. Design, wording, photos and setting it up. This is the big one-off cost. Ours: €390, or €290 for our first 5 clients.
- The domain. Your address, like yourbusiness.com. Around €12 a year for a .com. It should always be registered in your name.
- Hosting. Keeping the site online, fast and secure. With us it is part of the yearly care.
- Upkeep. Changing prices and hours, security updates, keeping your Google listing current. Ours: €100 a year, which covers hosting too.
Monthly website builders versus a one-off build
Do-it-yourself builders and many agencies charge every month. That looks cheap at first, but the cost never stops, extras like booking are often another monthly fee, and if you stop paying the site disappears. Over three or four years the total is usually much more than a one-off build.
A one-off build with a small yearly fee costs less over time and the site is yours. The trade-off: you pay a bigger amount once at the start, which is why we show you a free sample first.
What changes the price
- Number of pages. Most small businesses need one long page or a few short ones.
- Online booking, deposits or a shop. These are extra work and are quoted separately.
- Languages. A second language adds wording, not a whole new site.
- Photos and wording. If you have good photos, it is simpler. We write the wording for you.
Watch out for
- A domain registered in the designer’s name instead of yours: you cannot leave without losing it
- Monthly fees for booking or forms that should be part of the site
- “Guaranteed #1 on Google” promises. Nobody can guarantee that.
- A price without a sample: you should see what you are buying
